Even though I’ve had 18 years so far,

 it doesn’t seem like it was enough. 

I remember the little boy who was full of silliness, songs,

 happiness, empathy, smiles and fun. 

Remember that time you grew out 

your hair to donate to cancer?! 

I always will.

 And I also appreciate the teenage boy full of 

ambition, respect, kindness, courtesy, grit and grind.

So here we go celebrating your 18th birthday 

and I am choking back the tears 

because it breaks me to not be with you today. 

 I miss being your person at the rink. 

However, I couldn’t be more proud of you 

and who you choose to be.  

I know that you are right where you are supposed to be 

and it makes my heart ache a little bit less. 

I love you more than anything - even extra closet space.
